Canelands Shopping Centre Carpark Lighting & Emergency Upgrade

Project Overview

The Canelands carpark lighting upgrade in Mackay saw Smartscape, in conjunction with Bonlec, deliver a complete lighting and emergency control solution. The project combined monitored EMEGY fittings with a Zencontrol wireless control system to create a more flexible and maintainable installation.

The upgrade replaced existing fittings that had stopped functioning correctly or had failed over time. The new solution incorporated EMEGY DALI-2 1200mm 36W battens, surface mount emergency downlights and IP65 exit signs.

Lighting and Emergency Control

A key part of the design was the use of DALI-2 emergency converters within the battens. This allowed the fittings to operate as part of the normal lighting system. As a result, they could be switched, dimmed and grouped as required, while still maintaining monitored emergency functionality.

For emergency compliance and maintenance, the monitored emergency converters allow function and duration testing to be carried out as required. They also simplify fault monitoring and reporting.

Zencontrol Wireless System

The control system was built around a number of Zencontrol wireless field controllers. These controllers plug directly into the site LAN and communicate with a wireless bridge embedded within each fixture.

This made it possible to create a fully addressable wireless lighting network across the carpark without the need to install new control cabling throughout the existing site. That was a major advantage in a live retrofit environment.

Because each fitting is individually addressed into the system, the client now has a much higher level of visibility and control. Individual luminaires can be monitored and controlled, lighting levels can be adjusted, and fittings can be organised into groups to suit the operational requirements of the site.

Cloud Monitoring and Future Expansion

Through the cloud-based software platform, the system can also be accessed remotely. This provides visibility of the installation and its status from anywhere in the world. In turn, this simplifies ongoing management, fault identification and maintenance planning.

Another advantage of the Zencontrol platform is that the system remains highly expandable. At any time, further wireless or wired DALI devices can be added as the site evolves. Planning for additional upgrades on this site is already underway, giving the client a scalable control platform that can continue to grow with future project stages.

Project Outcome

The final outcome is a modern, fully integrated lighting solution that combines general lighting control, monitored emergency lighting and wireless communication in one coordinated system. It provides the client with improved flexibility, simplified maintenance and a robust long-term platform for the carpark.
