Brisbane Metro Depot

Project Description

The Brisbane Metro Depot is Australia’s largest electric bus depot. It is set to begin operations in October 2024.

Located on a 10-hectare site just South of Brisbane CBD, the depot is poised to become a pivotal hub for Brisbane’s new rapid bus transportation system.

The depot, which has undergone over 400,000 hours of construction, is designed to support Brisbane’s new fleet of fully electric metros. The facility boasts 65 charging stations, including five fast chargers.

More than 2,300 solar panels have been installed, generating clean energy equivalent to the annual power consumption of 280 homes. This initiative alone is expected to reduce carbon emissions by an amount comparable to removing over 500 cars from Brisbane’s roads each year.

The Brisbane Metro Depot has been awarded a 5 Star Green Rating for its sustainable design.

Every light fitting, over 1000 of them, in this project is DALI controlled. The requirements were individual control for energy saving, occupant comfort and reporting of data – luminaire, energy & diagnostics of each individual fitting. The site buildings include; Administration, Warehousing, Workshops, Bus Wash Stations, Carparks and Road lighting.

The DALI lighting control system was selected due to the sheer size of the project, the light fitting information required and BMS integration. We needed to offer a complete lighting control system that would assist the site in achieving their 5-Star rating.

A DALI lighting control system offers several benefits that make it a compelling choice for this application:

  1. Flexibility and Scalability: DALI allows for easy integration of various lighting fixtures and control devices. You can add or remove fixtures without a complete system overhaul, making it ideal for growing spaces.
  2. Individual Addressing: Each light can be individually addressed, allowing for precise control over each fixture. This enables tailored lighting scenes for different areas and activities.
  3. Two-Way Communication: DALI supports two-way communication, meaning devices can send status updates back to the controller. This feature helps in monitoring and managing lighting more effectively.
  4. Energy Efficiency: By allowing for sophisticated dimming and control, DALI systems can significantly reduce energy consumption. You can set lights to adjust based on occupancy or daylight levels.
  5. Standardization: As an internationally recognized standard, DALI ensures compatibility between devices from different manufacturers, simplifying system design and upgrades.
  6. User-Friendly Interfaces: DALI systems come with intuitive control interfaces, making it easy for users to manage their lighting environments.
  7. Integration with Other Systems: DALI can be integrated with other building management systems, enhancing overall efficiency and control.
  8. Enhanced Lighting Quality: With features like dimming and scene-setting, DALI systems can improve the quality of lighting in a space, positively affecting mood and productivity.
  9. Future-Proofing: The DALI protocol continues to evolve, with newer versions adding features like wireless control, making it a future-proof choice for modern lighting needs.
